Week 4 Reading Reflection

Reading Reflection
For each reading reflection post, I ask you to address the following areas:
1) What was the biggest surprise for you in the reading? In other words, what did you read that stood out the most as different from your expectations?
I was unaware that the Pentagon had a division that received opinions and proposals year long that were meant to improve technology and communication.
2) Identify at least one part of the reading that was confusing to you.
I was slightly confused as to how duplication can be interpreted as innovation. The two are very separate and I believe the two are very separate in their ideas.
3) If you were able to ask two questions to the author, what would you ask? Why?
I felt the author described and covered all topics very thoroughly and there are not many questions that I would have.
4) Was there anything you think the author was wrong about? Where do you disagree with what she or he said? How?

I did not appreciate the author using the terms duplication and innovation synonymously and did not differentiate the two.

Top 5 World Problems

  1. The problem of pollution is a huge issue in our world and our generation. Air pollution from manufacturing and industrial practices, as well as the increased use of single-use products as caused a massive amount of waste and pollution that is producing harmful effects on our environment.
  2. Another common problem in this world is cultural, racial, and religious intolerance. I believe this derives from a deeper misunderstanding and belief in ones own opinion.
  3. The global economic market is very unstable and sporadic. China’s economy is slowing, the oil industry is plummeting, and the Euro is at its lowest point in history.
  4. ISIS is spreading and radicalizing individuals at an alarming rate and has already taken the lives of innocent civilians across the globe. Their inhumane and misinformed ideology needs to be addressed and squandered.
  5. The honeybee population is lowering at an alarming rate. The use of pesticides and herbicides to create GMOs kills colony of bees and bees are the most important aspect in pollination.
I believe pollution is the biggest problem because it has the largest realm of effects on the earth and its inhabitants. Too much pollution leads to detrimental health and environmental effects that can be catastrophic to a certain degree.

  1. This problem could be solved by implementing cleaner and more practical manufacturing practices as well as creating more environmentally friendly products.
  2. I think this problem could be solved by teaching people of different backgrounds the importance of each others culture and religion. If everyone was able to relate to each other the would would be much more peaceful place.
  3. Creating a more sustainable economy and utilizing a singular currency and restricting trade between unstable countries could stabilize and potentially grow the economy.
  4. Solving this problem is extremely complex but I believe if a number of powerful countries work together to use their resources they can stop the spread of ISIS and end the threat of global terror.
  5. The government has to restrict the use of certain pesticides and herbicides and use more scientific research to reduce the death of bees.
I believe cleaner and more practical manufacturing practices are the easiest to implement because these companies are not monitored whatsoever and can easily be punished with severe penalties for the infringement of outlined laws.

Week 3 Reading Reflection

1) The biggest surprise to me in this reading was the fact that entrepreneurship does not derive from taught skills. If you are an entrepreneur you are able to excel in whatever you undertake.
2) It was very confusing to me that the reading identified the tools of entrepreneurship as being those that are taught or gifted. I always thought entrepreneurship was something you were born with. you.
3) I would ask the author why he described entrepreneurship in the manner that he did. I would also ask the author why he described the tools to succeed as an entrepreneur in such a vague way.
4) I believe the author was incorrect in the manner that he described the necessary tools to succeed as an entrepreneur and how he was recommending the correct path to entrepreneurship

World's Biggest Problems

World’s Biggest Problems
  1. Our world’s biggest problem is lack of transparency among governments and the people. Citizens of all countries around the world have the right to understand how and why certain laws are passed.
  2. Another common problem in this world is cultural, racial, and religious intolerance. I believe this derives from a deeper misunderstanding and belief in ones own opinion.
  3. The problem of pollution is a huge issue in our world and our generation. Air pollution from manufacturing and industrial practices, as well as the increased use of single-use products as caused a massive amount of waste and pollution that is producing harmful effects on our environment.
  4. The global economic market is very unstable and sporadic. China’s economy is slowing, the oil industry is plummeting, and the Euro is at its lowest point in history.
  5. The honeybee population is lowering at an alarming rate. The use of pesticides and herbicides to create GMOs kills colony of bees and bees are the most important aspect in pollination.
  6. The european migrant crisis is a major problem plaguing many countries. These innocent people are fleeing unstable and war torn countries where they have lost jobs, homes, and family and friends.
  7. The war on drugs is failing and a waste of money and resources. Drug use is looked at as more as a crime rather than an addiction or illness. The war causes more violence.
  8. ISIS is spreading and radicalizing individuals at an alarming rate and has already taken the lives of innocent civilians across the globe. Their inhumane and misinformed ideology needs to be addressed and squandered.
  9. Widespread poverty and famine is problem many individuals face in regions throughout the world. Some of it is caused by unstable and corrupt governments, while others are caused by the environment and lack of sustainable professions.
  10. The increasing global population is a serious issue that causes a domino effect of other global problems. I believe a major proponent of this is the lack of knowledge of contraception around the globe. While many westerners are well aware of the benefits of contraceptions, others are completely unaware.

  1. I think this problem could be solved by having active citizens monitor and audit government officials to ensure they are acting legally and ethically.
  2. I think this problem could be solved by teaching people of different backgrounds the importance of each others culture and religion. If everyone was able to relate to each other the would would be much more peaceful place.
  3. This problem could be solved by implementing cleaner and more practical manufacturing practices as well as creating more environmentally friendly products.
  4. Creating a more sustainable economy and utilizing a singular currency and restricting trade between unstable countries could stabilize and potentially grow the economy.
  5. The government has to restrict the use of certain pesticides and herbicides and use more scientific research to reduce the death of bees.
  6. The United States and other countries should do the best they can to accommodate these migrants because that is the humane thing to do.
  7. We should take a similar approach to that of Canada and Portugal where they treat drug users with addiction and rehabilitation rather than throwing them into prison to repeat their crimes once out.
  8. Solving this problem is extremely complex but I believe if a number of powerful countries work together to use their resources they can stop the spread of ISIS and end the threat of global terror.
  9. Poverty and famine can be solved by distributing wealth and sustainable crops to the hardest hit countries.
  10. Making those in regions of the world that lack sufficient and advanced technology aware to the benefits of contraception and the availability will seriously decrease the growing population and spread of medical disease .

Week 2 Reading Reflection

The biggest surprise for me in this reading was the distinction between small business owners and entrepreneurs. I knew that they were used interchangeably, but I had not realized the venturous motives of an entrepreneur versus that of a small business owner. The global perspective of entrepreneurship was somewhat confusing to me. I had no idea how largely and effective entrepreneurs were on thew world economy. It is truly fascinating. If I could ask the author any question it would be to invoke more of their personal opinion and experience on the realm of entrepreneurship, as well as why they chose to differentiate entrepreneurs from innovative small business owners. There is nothing that I really disagree with that the author has written. I believe they are very well spoken and seem knowledgable on the subject of entrepreneurship.

After writing this list I realized I am a very particular individual and certain things irk me more than others. I believe if everyone was more conscience of their actions and their effects on others our world would be a much more peaceful place.

My Entrepreneurship Story

I have always been interested in entrepreneurship and the endeavors of you entrepreneurs. I admire the ambition an individual harnesses to undertake a mission to create and innovate a product or service that has the power to change the world. I was exposed to entrepreneurship in middle school when I competed in the Sally Ride Science Toy Challenge. My group undertook the creation and development of a floating pool board game that was both fun and educational for children. Our hard work and determination granted us the opportunity to compete at the championships in Washington DC. To fund our trip to the nations capital, our entrepreneurial minds sold scented pencils to all the kids at our school. We were savvy entrepreneurs at the young age of eleven and our futures looked bright from there.

I enrolled in ENT 3003 because I aspire to follow in the footsteps of some of the most successful entrepreneurs before me. I would like to acquire the necessary skill set to grow and create something that I am passionate about. I hope to apply everything I learn throughout this course in my professional career to become a successful businessman.

Introduction

Hi there! My name is Ethan Brennan and I am a sophomore finance major at the greatest institution of higher learning, the University of Florida. Being a Florida Gator is in my blood and has long been an aspiration of mine growing up the son of two UF alumni. I am a huge sports and music fan and there is nothing I enjoy more than a Saturday in the swamp or a live show at a festival. I see myself as a very ambitious and driven individual, willing to take whatever steps necessary to succeed. I enjoy hanging out with my friends and making memories that will last a lifetime. It's important to cherish those around you and the positive impact they have on your life. The picture below is of my best friends, [Chris and Mark] and I at Bonnaroo, a music and arts festival.
